Recife - CE

History of Recife:

Recife started as a series of fishing shacks, inns, and warehouses on the delta between the Capibaribe and Beberibe Rivers in the captaincy of Pernambuco between 1535 and 1537, during the early days of Portuguese colonization of Terra de Santa Cruz, later known as Brazil, on the northeast coast of South America. It was a settlement of colonial fishermen and way station for Portuguese sailors and passing ships.

Where is Recife?

Recife is the capital and largest city of the state of Pernambuco in the northeast corner of South America, with a population of 4,054,866 people. It is also the second largest metropolitan area in the North/Northeast Regions.

The city is situated where the Beberibe and Capibaribe rivers meet before flowing into the South Atlantic Ocean. On the Atlantic, it is a big port. Its name refers to the stone reefs that can be found along the city's shores.

Geography:

Recife has a number of islands, rivers, waterways and bridges that crisscross the city and has often been called "The Venice of Brazil". The city is located amidst tropical forests which are distinguished by high rainfall levels, resulting in poor soil quality as the heavy dense rainfall washes away the nutrients. There is an absence of extreme temperatures and the area enjoys a cool breeze due to the trade winds from the South Atlantic Ocean to the east.

Climate:

January and February are the warmest months, with mean temperatures ranging from 30 °C (86 °F) to 22 °C (72 °F), with sun. July is the cloudiest month and experiences the coolest temperatures, with mean temperatures ranging from 27 °C (81 °F) to 21 °C (70 °F). It is also the wettest month, receiving an average of 388 mm (15.3 in) of rain. Recife features a short dry season which lasts from October to December. The driest and sunniest month is November, when maximum temperatures hover around 30 °C (86 °F) and an average of 36 mm (1.4 in) of rain is recorded.
