Gramado

History of Gramado:
What/Where is Gramado?

Gramado was initially settled by Portuguese immigrants in 1875. Five years later, the first German immigrants arrived and Italian immigrants from the Italian settlements in Caxias do Sul followed shortly afterwards.

The town seat was moved to Linha Nova, the site of the present-day town center, in 1913. Gramado was an unincorporated community within the city of Taquara at this time. In 1921, Gramado's founder and first administrator, José Nicoletti Filho, brought a railroad to the area, boosting the local economy. In 1937, when Gramado was already known as summer holiday resort, Gramado officially became a town on December 15, 1954 by force of State Act 2,522.

In the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, in the Serra Gaúcha region, Gramado is a small tourist town, southeast of Caxias do Sul and east of Nova Petrópolis. Originally, the city was settled by descendants of the Azores and later received a contingent of immigrants from Germany and Italy. Gramado is one of the cities along the Rota Romântica scenic route (Romantic Route).

Geography:
Open spaces:

Gramado has several green areas, the most important are Black Lake, Communications Square, Knorr Park, Orchard Park, Major Nicoletti Square and, Roses Square.

Lago Negro:

The most well-known and visited green area of Gramado is Lago Negro (Black Lake). It was established[6] by Leopoldo Rosenfeld in 1953 in an area that was the largest forest in the Hydrangeas region, which was destroyed by fire in 1942. It was called Vale do Bom Retiro (Good Rest Valley) before the fire.

To create a U-shaped lake, a creek has been dammed up. Rosenfeld imported pine seedlings from Germany's Black Forest to be planted all over the rim of the newly created lake.

Lago Negro is within a mile of the Town Hall. A boathouse, operating daily from 8:30 AM to 7:00 PM, concession stands and a small fair for craftsmen are located nearby.
